4 Reasons Why Denver is More Than Just a Stopover on Your Way to the Mountains

The thought of visiting the majestic Colorado Rockies tends to overshadow the beauty of the very city you’re likely passing through, Denver. Most visitors to Colorado think of Denver as just a pit stop before hitting the slopes or trails. But Denver has way more to offer than a quick coffee break at the airport. So, grab your hiking boots or your comfiest sneakers and take a little time to explore the Mile High City.

1. An Outdoor Lover's Paradise Right in the City

One of the best things about living in Denver is how easy it is to balance city life with nature. You don’t even have to leave town to get outside, there are more than 200 parks right here. I love wandering through City Park, where you get that perfect view of the skyline with the mountains behind it, or hopping on my bike along the Cherry Creek Path. Don’t forget your camera, because the scenery is perfect for snapping a few pics and changes a ton as you travel along the path. And if you’re into picnics, grab some snacks from Union Station (LOCAL TIP: you can get grab and go items at the coffee shop - Pigtrain or a nice sandwich from Camino, Olive & Finch or Mercantile) and enjoy them under the trees. The sunsets will stop you in your tracks every time.

2. Craft Beer Capital of the World

Denver is often called the craft beer capital of the world. With more than 150 breweries around town, it’s basically paradise if you love a good pint. Each spot has its own personality, some cozy and laid‑back, others buzzing with energy, where you’ll find beers that range from light and flavorful to deep, satisfying stouts. And, since most locals love IPAs, so almost every brewery has a few to choose from. If you’ve got a free day, check out the Denver Beer Trail. It’s a fun way to wander through the city while tasting your way from one brewery to the next. And if you’re hungry, do yourself a favor and grab a bison burger (very Colorado and a must try if you eat meat) with a local brew at Wynkoop Brewing Company, which is right across from Union Station, so super convenient. It’s the kind of combo that makes you glad you stuck around Denver.

LOCAL Tip: Try at least a 4 oz. sampler of the Green Chili Beer at Wynkoop Brewing to wash down that bison, if you want to try something unique to Denver

3. Where Taste Buds Find Happiness

Denver’s food scene is a treat all on its own. From food trucks to fine dining, you’ll find flavors from all over the world made with fresh, local ingredients. Grab a bite at Denver Central Market, where you can sample artisanal cheeses, pastries, and wood‑fired pizza, or spice things up at The Source (a concept with a number of awesome restaurants housed in one building) with some amazing Mexican dishes. And don’t skip brunch; it’s basically a tradition here in Denver. The huevos rancheros at Snooze are a must, and by the end of your food adventure, you’ll feel like you belong in the Mile High City, and maybe even pack a few recipes to take home.

4. Culture And Arts Vibrancy

Denver has a cultural side that’s just as impressive as its mountains. The Denver Art Museum is a highlight, with Native American collections alongside contemporary and classic works, while the Denver Performing Arts Complex brings everything from Broadway shows to local productions under one roof. I just saw Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors here, and it was one of the best plays I've seen in years and not what you'd expect at all, but the shows are always rotating.

If you’re around for First Friday, the RiNo Art District comes alive with galleries, music, and street energy that makes you feel part of the scene on the first Friday of each month. You could also check out the graffiti art murals tour with Discover Denver Tours, which gives you a closer look at the city’s creative street art. Take the time to soak it all in, you might walk away with a new favorite artist and a deeper appreciation for the city.

Denver isn’t just a stop on the way to the mountains, it’s a destination worth slowing down for.
