If you’re going to find yourself in Denver, you’ll probably enjoyed the vibrant scene, breathtaking views, and all the food you can eat, but did you know that Denver is the perfect jumping-off point for some absolutely incredible day trips? If you have some time and are looking to step outside the city and explore the Colorado wonders nearby, check out these five amazing day trips that will leave you feeling refreshed and recharged.


1. Rocky Mountain National Park

First on the list is the undeniable gem of Colorado, Rocky Mountain National Park. Just about 70 miles from downtown Denver, this majestic park is a must-visit for any nature lover. With its towering peaks, serene lakes, and wildlife, this Colorado attraction is like a postcard come to life.


What to Do:

- Trail Ridge Road: While open seasonally, it’s one of the highest paved roads in North America offering jaw-dropping views for your drive.  

- Hiking Trails: There are plenty of trails for every skill level, but if you’re up for a challenge, try the Keyhole Route.

- Wildlife Watching: Keep your eyes peeled for elk, marmots, and more. You'll feel like you’re in a nature documentary!


2. Garden of the Gods















Next up is the stunning Garden of the Gods, located in Colorado Springs about 70 miles south of Denver. This natural landmark is famous for its striking red rock formations that seem to burst from the earth. It’s perfect for a day of outdoor exploration and photography. 


What to Do:

- Hiking & Biking: Wander the numerous trails or rent a bike and hit the scenic routes.

- Rock Climbing: Sign up for a climbing session with a local guide to fuel your adventurous side.

3. Golden, Colorado
















A charming little town snuggled in the foothills, Golden is only about a 30-minute drive from Denver. It’s famous for its historic downtown and gorgeous mountain views. Plus, it gives you that classic Colorado vibe of beers and outdoor adventures. 


What to Do:

- Coors Brewery Tour: If you enjoy craft beer, you can't miss the Coors Brewery tour. It’s free and comes with samples!

- Clear Creek River: Stroll along the river or rent a kayak if you're feeling sporty.

- Lookout Mountain: A short drive uphill will reward you with panoramic views. Don’t forget to visit the memorial site of Buffalo Bill while you’re up there.


4. Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway
















If breathtaking mountain views are your jam, then an adventure along the Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway should be at the top of your list. It’s about a 1.5-hour drive from Denver and takes you to one of the highest paved roads in North America, peaking at 14,130 feet.


What to Do:

- Drive the Byway: Enjoy the ride, but keep a lookout for mountain goats along the way.

- Summit Hikes: Once you reach the top, there are various trails to explore, including the short hike to the summit.

- Photography: Do not forget to bring your camera because the views are out of this world!


5. Pikes Peak

Last but definitely not least is the legendary Pikes Peak, about 75 miles from Denver. It’s one of Colorado’s 14ers (mountain peaks over 14,000 feet) and holds a special place in the hearts of both locals and tourists.


What to Do:

- Pikes Peak Highway:  Drive or cycle up this scenic highway that leads to the summit. It’s a true bucket list experience. 

- Cog Railway: Take the Pikes Peak Cog Railway for a scenic journey up the mountain. You’ll be amazed by the views along the way.

- Summit House: Try the world-famous donuts at the summit house.
